About this course
As a therapist, you spend your days holding space for clients in vulnerable, sometimes painful psychological states while stress accumulates in your own body and mind. Research shows that brief mindfulness practices between sessions significantly improve therapeutic presence and clinical outcomes. Learn specific artmaking techniques you can implement immediately—before sessions, between clients, or at day's end—to ground yourself and enhance your capacity for authentic therapeutic connection.
In this six session course, you'll master restorative yet playful ink and watercolor techniques designed for busy clinical schedules. You’ll build foundational skills in the media with simple mark making and patterns. By session six, you'll be able to create expressive mixed media works. Experience these artmaking practices in focused 5-10 minute sessions that help you mindfully transition between clients, or practice in longer blocks of time at the beginning or end of a treatment day. These activities provide a ground for creativity to take root in your clinical practice and in your approach to life.

All individual sessions are conducted online so you can comfortably participate from your space. I generally meet with clients weekly or every other week. In addition to sessions, courses include self-directed creative practices to nurture your creative practice independently.
From the first session we will become acquainted with our materials and start creating art. As challenges in your creative process arise, please voice them. I will gently guide you to release these fears to have a stronger connection with the artist in you.
What to expect
-
Sessions begin with a check-in on the current state of your mind and body. It typically includes a brief mindfulness practice such as breathwork, guided meditation or gentle movement to ground in the present.
-
Warm-up activities help you shift into a creative mode of being. Warm-ups may also include exploring art-in-progress from a previous session.
-
The majority of each session is dedicated to artmaking guided by prompts and practices in the course. No artistic skills are necessary—I encourage clients to allow their innate image making abilities to emerge. At times I will introduce techniques and processes to provide you with more means of creative expression.
As your facilitator, I have no aesthetic expectations of your artmaking. I focus on process, not outcome. I will gently encourage you to release your own expectations, judgements and comparisons about your art so that you can connect with your inmost being.
-
As we close the session, I ask open-ended questions to invite reflection on the artmaking process. We’ll also explore ways to integrate creativity into your routine self-care.
Additionally, during this time I will offer creative practices for you to explore in between sessions to nurture your creative self daily.
-
Current course participants receive thoughtful between-session support through brief asynchronous check-ins via photo and audio messages. Share key moments from your practice—both challenges and wins—and receive personalized guidance to support your creative integration. This focused support complements our scheduled sessions and helps maintain momentum in the development of your creative skills and therapeutic presence.
-
Wisdom Artworks will provide a list of recommended materials for each course. I encourage you to use art supplies you may already have on hand.
Clients are responsible for providing their own materials. Many clients delight in going to an art supply store and selecting the materials they will use. This may be the first of many “artist dates” — time set aside weekly for playful imaginative creativity.
